How Much Does ISO 27001 Certification Cost in Australia?

13 October 20253 min read

ISO 27001 certification is not a single purchase - it is an ongoing program with upfront implementation costs, certification audit fees, and annual maintenance obligations. Understanding the full cost picture before you commit helps avoid surprises and allows you to plan the investment properly.

The cost components of ISO 27001

Gap assessment

Before implementation begins, most organisations conduct a gap assessment - evaluating current security practices against the requirements of ISO 27001. This identifies what needs to be built or improved. Conducted by an external consultant, a gap assessment for a small to mid-size Australian organisation typically costs $8,000 to $25,000.

Implementation consulting

This is typically the largest cost component. An external consultant helps design the ISMS, develop policies and procedures, build the risk register, implement controls, and prepare the organisation for audit. Costs vary significantly by organisation size and existing maturity:

  • Small organisation (under 50 staff): $20,000 to $50,000
  • Mid-size organisation (50-200 staff): $40,000 to $100,000
  • Large organisation (200+ staff): $80,000 and above, often significantly more

Organisations with higher existing security maturity require less implementation work and lower consulting fees. Those starting from a low baseline will spend more.

Certification audit fees

ISO 27001 certification audits are conducted by accredited certification bodies. The audit occurs in two stages: Stage 1 is a documentation review; Stage 2 is the full on-site audit. Typical certification body fees for Australian organisations are:

  • Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit combined: $8,000 to $25,000
  • Cost depends on organisation size, scope complexity and auditor day rates

Annual surveillance audits

ISO 27001 certification must be maintained through annual surveillance audits. These are shorter than the initial certification audit and typically cost $4,000 to $10,000 per year. A full recertification audit is required every three years.

Internal resource costs

Implementing and maintaining an ISMS requires significant internal time - particularly from IT, legal, and management. In the first year, internal resource costs are often comparable to or greater than external consulting fees, especially for organisations without dedicated security staff.

Technology and tooling

Some organisations invest in GRC platforms or ISMS software to manage their risk register, policy library and audit evidence. These tools are not mandatory but can reduce internal administrative burden. Annual SaaS costs for ISMS platforms range from $3,000 to $20,000 depending on the product and organisation size.

Total cost over three years

For a typical mid-size Australian organisation pursuing ISO 27001 for the first time, the total cost over the first three-year certification cycle - including gap assessment, implementation consulting, certification audit and two surveillance audits - commonly falls in the range of $80,000 to $200,000. This does not include internal resource time.

How to reduce the cost

Organisations can reduce ISO 27001 costs by:

  • Scoping the ISMS narrowly to the most critical business functions initially, then expanding
  • Leveraging existing policies and documentation rather than rebuilding from scratch
  • Assigning a dedicated internal owner who can drive the program and reduce consultant dependency
  • Using ISMS software to automate evidence collection and audit preparation
  • Selecting a certification body with competitive day rates that still holds JAS-ANZ accreditation
