MSSP vs In-House Security Team: Which is Right for Your Business?

15 October 20253 min read

For most Australian businesses, the question is not whether to take security seriously - it is who should be responsible for it. Building an in-house security team and outsourcing to a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) both have genuine merits. The right choice depends on your size, risk exposure, budget and the maturity you need to achieve.

The case for an in-house team

In-house security staff understand your business deeply. They know your systems, your people, your risk tolerance and your priorities. They can be embedded in product and engineering decisions, respond to incidents without a communication overhead, and build institutional knowledge over time.

For large organisations with complex environments, dedicated security staff are often essential. A CISO and a small internal team provide strategic leadership, governance and accountability that an outsourced provider cannot fully replicate.

The case for an MSSP

The core argument for an MSSP is capability per dollar. Hiring a qualified security analyst in Australia costs $100,000 to $160,000 per year in salary, not counting benefits, management overhead, training and the risk of turnover. For that cost, you get one person - who works business hours, takes leave, and may lack specialist depth in areas you need.

An MSSP provides a team with diverse specialist skills, 24/7 coverage, tooling, and threat intelligence at a monthly cost that is often lower than a single full-time hire. For small and mid-size businesses, this is a compelling trade-off.

The real cost comparison

A realistic in-house security capability for a 100-person Australian business might require at minimum one security analyst and a share of an IT manager's time. Fully loaded cost: $150,000 to $200,000 per year. Coverage: business hours, with after-hours incidents relying on on-call arrangements.

A comparable MSSP engagement for the same organisation - 24/7 SOC monitoring, endpoint detection and response, monthly reporting - typically costs $60,000 to $120,000 per year. Coverage: around the clock, with a dedicated analyst team rather than a single person.

What an MSSP cannot fully replace

An MSSP is not a substitute for internal security ownership. Someone inside your organisation still needs to own security strategy, manage vendor relationships, make risk decisions, and ensure security is considered in product and business decisions. An MSSP provides operational capability - it does not replace leadership.

For organisations without an in-house security function, a virtual CISO (vCISO) service combined with an MSSP can provide both strategic oversight and operational coverage without the cost of full-time staff.

A practical decision framework

Choose an MSSP if:

  • You have fewer than 200 staff and limited budget for dedicated security headcount
  • You need 24/7 coverage that in-house staff cannot provide cost-effectively
  • Your environment is not so complex that an outsider cannot understand it quickly
  • Your primary need is detection and response rather than security strategy

Build in-house if:

  • You are a large organisation with complex, high-value environments
  • You operate in a highly regulated industry requiring deep internal accountability
  • Security is a competitive differentiator or core to your product
  • You need security embedded in engineering and product decisions daily
